And know that whatever of a thing you acquire, a fifth of it is for Allah,
for the Messenger, for the near relative, and the orphans, the needy, and the wayfarer.
Khums describes a Muslim’s obligation at the beginning of a new Khums accounting year to pay one-fifth (20%) of their annual profit or surplus income. Khums plays an important part in the Islamic economic system, in preserving economic equilibrium and supporting charitable causes.
The share of the Imam – Sahm Al-Imam: this part is spent on different charitable causes at the discretion of the jurist (Marja’a).
The share of the Sayyids – Sahm Al-Sada: this part is spent on descendants of Hashim, the great grandfather of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW), who are in need.
Due to our important services provided to orphaned children, Al-Ayn has been given authorization (Ijaza) to handle both Sahm Al-Imam and Sahm Al-Sada donations.
Read the official (ljaza) (written permission) from Al-Sayyid Ali Al-Hussaini Al-Sistani here. Arabic Version of the permission letter is here.
Khums becomes obligatory at the beginning of your financial year on the profit or surplus of your income after deducting annual living expenses. If you are an employee or businessman that is the date you started your job, otherwise it is a year from the date each profit amount is made. You should consult a local scholar if you are unsure how to calculate your khums.
You can also contact us with specific queries about calculating your Khums or spreading the payments over the year, and we can arrange for a scholarly response.
Khums donations received by Al-Ayn are utilized to provide essential support to orphaned children, primarily in the form of monthly financial allowances to lift them out of poverty. This applies to both Sahm Al-Imam and Sahm Al-Sada donations*.
If you would like your Khums donation to be spent specifically on one of our Sadaqa Jariya projects, please contact us and we can apply on your behalf for permission for that from the office of Al-Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani.
* Sahm Al-Sada is distributed to orphaned children of Hashimi lineage, defined according to jurisprudential requirements. We have an arrangement with the office of Al-Sayyed Al-Sistani to exchange any excess Sahm Al-Sada donations with Sahm Al-Imam donations to be distributed to other orphaned children.
