These are non-fungible items which were subject to khums prior to your khums due date, and which you have already utilized. Calculate these according to their value at point of utilization. Non–fungible items are unique items, such as unique paintings, monuments, and unique jewelry.

Calculated on your khums due date. Includes the remainder of funds that were subject to khums in previous years and on which you have already paid khums.

Notes

1) Your khums due date is the first day you started your job or business. If you are retired or not in employment, then you can agree a khums due date with a representative of the marja'a, or calculate separate khums years for each profit that you make, from the date you made that profit.
2) The khums of commercial commodities and real estate(s) which are intended for trading, should be paid in accordance with their current market value, even if they were bought with profits which a year has elapsed on, unless the price at which they were bought is higher than the current value.
3) If the calculations show that the amount of khums due is negative as a result of sustenance debts, then the amount of the sustenance debt equivalent to the amount of khums due for the rest of the item is calculated and excluded.
4) If sustenance debts are fully repaid in the financial year, this amount is excluded from the profits.

Meet Zahra

Dignity. Recovery. Hope.

My name is Adawiya. I am a wife, a mother of three, and a businesswoman. After my husband, Hassan passed away 12 years ago, my heart was shattered. His absence was felt by the heartbreak he left behind. But I knew I had to be strong and place my own needs aside to take care of our children.

Now, they are my hope. Zahra, (pictured) in particular, is very gifted in school. Three days ago, the school held a “Parent’s Evening,” which is similar to parent-teacher conferences. Zahra’s teacher commended me on her, praising me for doing a great job. She commented that Zahra is always presentable and prepared for class. I have no doubt that Hassan would be proud of her. He had passed away when I was pregnant with her brother, Munjed, who as a result, never had the chance to meet his father. Zahra was also very young and even her older brother, Yousif, can barely recall his father’s image.

During those years of violence, Hassan was one of the statistics, killed by criminals, but to me he was everything. Hassan had his own shop and we were living comfortably. He used to give us everything we need and more. I will never forget overhearing him say to the shop workers: “If orphaned children come to the shop, undercharge them”.

With Hassan gone, I was struggling and did not have any income to support our children who were now orphaned. Soon after I gave birth to Munjed, I began to bake bread at home and sell it to my neighbors. In the beginning, I would go to bed hungry and scared. But as the demand grew, my earnings allowed me to support myself and my children and covered our rent. I still bake today but a lot less than before. Five years ago, my health deteriorated and I could no longer keep up with the orders so my income reduced significantly. A friend registered my family at Al-Ayn and since then all my children receive sponsorship support every month. We are looked after here. I have even received furniture for our home and my medical condition is being treated for free. I hope to be able to get better so I can work again but in the meantime, I am grateful and do not feel alone.
